The Dental Veneer Procedure
Veneers typically require at least two dental visits. First, the dentist will take X-rays if necessary, thoroughly examine your teeth, discuss the aesthetic result you wish to achieve, explain the procedure and create a personalized treatment plan to fit your needs.
She will use a shade guide to determine which color of porcelain most closely matches your teeth. To prepare your tooth for a veneer, the area will be numbed with a local anesthetic if needed and a bit of tooth enamel will be removed from the tooth’s surface. Next, we will take a precise impression of your teeth. The impressions will be sent to a dental lab for the veneer to be custom-made by a professional laboratory technician. It usually about two weeks for ceramic veneers to return from the lab. We will place temporary veneers on your teeth that will remain until the permanent ones return from the lab.
Placing Permanent Veneers
When you come in to have your permanent veneers bonded, we will temporarily place them on your teeth to check fit and color and trim them as needed to ensure a proper look and fit. Your tooth will be cleaned, polished and etched to roughen the surface and ensure a secure bonding process. The veneer is then permanently cemented to your tooth. Any excess cement will be removed, and final adjustments will be made to ensure your teeth properly come together when you bite down.
