As the end of the year approaches, so does the deadline to use your dental benefits! Depending on your insurance provider, you may have certain benefits that will expire after the new year, so you may want to check with your human resources department or insurance agent to see the details of your particular plan. Additionally, the holidays are a prime time to use your benefits as you may be needing a thorough cleaning after partaking in the many treats the season can offer.
What Are Dental Benefits?
Most dental policies usually cover 100% of preventative care such as dental examinations and cleanings, but some policies do require a co-payment. Other treatments such as procedures (major or minor) are usually covered partially by insurance with the patient being responsible for the remaining balance. Some of the services that are usually covered at least in part by insurance include:
- Fillings
- Crowns
- Root canals
- Oral surgery
- Orthodontics such as braces or retainers*
- Periodontal treatment*
- Dentures*
- Bridges*
(*These services are usually optional add ons to your policy depending on your age and specific dental needs)
Elective procedures are usually not covered by insurance, but some payment plan programs can make these procedures a little more affordable.
Deductibles
Some policies require that you meet your deductible, or a minimum dollar amount before your benefits will kick in. Deductibles often reset on January 1st, so if you have met your deductible and are still needing treatment, now is the time to receive care to avoid having to begin paying toward your deductible again after the new year.
