When Should Your Child See a Dentist?

Your child should visit the dentist as soon as their baby teeth start to erupt, around the age of 6 months to 1 year old. Seeing a dentist while they’re very young helps kids become familiar with what happens at a dental appointment so they’re comfortable at future visits. Having your child’s mouth checked out also allows us to detect early decay and provide instruction on how to properly care for your child’s teeth. Bringing your child to your own dental appointment to take a look around and meet our staff also helps them become accustomed to visiting the dentist.

Children have 20 primary teeth, which are usually all erupted by the age of 3. Around ages 2 to 4, most children become comfortable sitting in the dentist’s chair on their own.

Pediatric Dental Care

Dr. Jenn and our dental staff are experienced in pediatric dentistry and work hard to make your child’s visit as pleasant and fun as possible. We’ll check to make sure their primary and permanent teeth are coming in normally, look for cavities and observe any variations in jaw growth that may require orthodontic treatment. Our dentists often detect growth abnormalities that may eventually lead to crooked teeth or a poor bite. Early detection and intervention with orthodontic appliancescan help your child avoid more costly, complex treatment in the future.

Preventive Care

Visiting the dentist for regular checkups and cleanings is a must to keep your child’s teeth healthy. We also provide hygiene instruction to ensure your child understands how to properly clean their teeth. Children’s permanent molars typically erupt from ages 6-13. Our dentists may recommend putting sealants on these teeth. Dental sealants are a thin, protective coating that is applied to the biting surfaces of the teeth. Noninvasive and easy to apply, sealants create a protective shield against bacteria, preventing decay and cavities from forming in the nooks and crannies of back teeth. Sealants are most beneficial when placed soon after the permanent molars erupt.

Orthodontics

A misaligned bite, crooked teeth and gaps between teeth can lead to other dental problems like decay and TM issues. Space maintainers, braces and other orthodontic appliances can be used to fix an overbite, crossbite or underbite, reduce crowding, close gaps and create a healthy, beautiful smile.

Custom Athletic Mouthguards

Children and teens can easily injure their teeth while playing sports. We offer custom-made athletic mouthguards for athletes of all ages. These comfortable mouthguards can be worn during athletic activity to protect the teeth from injury and can be made in a variety of colors with your team’s logo added!
